Christian art, also referred to as Ars sacra (Latin for "holy art") in art studies, generally includes all areas of artistic creation that have Christian content as their theme. Image theology and image aesthetics was the research focus of the Cologne theologian Alex Stock. He was primarily concerned with communicating the visual arts as a crystallization point and medium of theological debate. Stock demonstrated this not only in Christian iconographic works, but also in studies of modern and contemporary artistic phenomena. The oldest surviving fully plastic Marian figure in Western art is the Golden Madonna, which was created around 980. The Darmstadt Madonna, the Sistine Madonna and the Stuppach Madonna come from the period of religious Renaissance painting. The crucifixion of Christ occupies another large space. The forms of representation are also varied here.
